In 1812, Napoleon I ruled over the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and Italy, becoming the king of Europe, but failed in his invasion of Russia and was exiled to the island of Elba. Then, in 1815, around the time he regained the throne, Jean Valjean arrived in Digne, France. However, with a criminal record, no one accepted him. Even though he had only stolen a piece of bread...
